District Geography:

Wisconsin's 6th Congressional District comprises the east-central counties of the state: Calumet, Dodge, Fond du Lac, Green Lake, Manitowoc, Marquette, Sheboygan, Waushara, Winnebago, and parts of Adams and Jefferson counties.

Summary:

Fourteen-term Republican incumbent Thomas E. Petri serves as vice chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee as well as vice chairman of the House Education and the Workforce Committee. Petri will not face a challenger in 2006.

History:

Petri won a special election in 1979 to fill the vacancy due to the death of seven-term Republican United States Representative William A. Steiger. Petri won the next twelve elections by an average margin of victory of 59 points, with only one close call - a 6-point win over Democratic nominee Peggy A. Lautenschlager in 1992. The Democrats have failed to field a candidate against Petri in six of the eleven races from 1986-2006.

Outlook:

Petri is running unopposed to win his 15th term to the U.S. House.
